Nowadays, parents want to give their children the advantage of learning a new language while they are young. This is especially the case in developing countries such as Japan, Korea, China and Thailand, where English is becoming more and more important.
Teaching Young Learners sometimes causes teachers, particularly those who have trained to teach adults, a variety of problems and generates a range of worries. Those first lessons with the class can seem daunting.
The CTYL course hopes to help teachers form a clearer understanding of the needs and learning strategies required for this age group along with tips for successful classroom management. It is designed to provide you with effective methods and plenty of creative resources and materials.

Syllabus
The following topics, skills and techniques will be covered:
The Young Learner/Teacher
You will study the special needs and motivations of the Young Learner and will try to understand all aspects of a child: social, emotional, intellectual, etc. You will also be shown how to interact effectively with young learners in a classroom.
Classroom Management
You will be instructed on how to properly manage children's behavior and to create an appropriate classroom atmosphere for learning English.
The Language of children
You will take a look at how to grade language properly, you will study effective ways of presenting new language and revising vocabulary with young learners.
Course and Resource Books
You will analyze a range of course books and resource books aimed at Young Learners and study ways of using them effectively. This session will also allow you to acquire proper instructive strategies using flashcards, stories, music, drama, crafts, games, projects, and pair work.
Skills 1: reading
You will consider how young learners learn to read and study ways of structuring lessons effectively to help young learners develop their reading skills.
Skills 2: listening and speaking
You will participate in a range of listening and speaking activities designed for young learners. Afterwards, you’ll analyse the rationale behind them and what makes them effective. You will also look at techniques for telling stories in the young learner classroom and are shown how to bring stories ‘alive’ for your students.
Skills 3: Writing
You will consider what is involved in learning to write and what makes it particularly difficult for young learners. In this session you will also participate in a range of activities designed for developing young learners' writing skills and consider what makes them effective.
Teaching Young Learners – activities
You will participate in various communicative activities designed for the young learner and analyse the rationale behind them.
